A reference number is a unique number that most collection companies and collect law firms use to identify your account. The reference number is in addition and separate from the original creditor’s account number. The reference number can also be called “file number” or referred to as the “collection company’s account number”. The reference number is an internal number only associated with the collection company or law firm, not the original creditor. It can be a long or short series of numbers, or a combination of numbers and letters. When using Paydoff, you will be guided through entering in a reference number for each of your creditors.
